Please post pictures of Saturns.
This one was named Norm. He served me well for years after I dropped out of college, right up until he got shot. RIP Norm.

Happy birthday!
Here’s a Mallett Sky.

No pictures on this computer, but imagine a 95 SL2 with a Volkswagen diesel engine swapped in.
That was my daily driver for a little over a year, before I sold it, and then the car sent a rod south on the new owner.

Thanks. I always liked the Sky, and to me it looked a lot better than the Solstice.

My 96 SL2 wasn't technically a diesel, although it certainly was an oil burner. It got to the point where I stopped doing oil changes because it never stayed around long enough to get dirty. When you're adding 1/3 of a quart at every fill up, there's not much need to change it out every 3,000 miles.

Happ y bir thday! I always thought this was one of the cleanest designs of the 90s.
Shame they look so dorky with a front license plate.

Why does ideal Greek guy have such massive toes?
![]() 01/06/2019 at 10:25 |

That’s what I’ve heard about the engines in them.
I never had one with the stock engine in it, but I’ve owned a 96 Corolla with the 1.8, and that had some ring issues from the factory and just ate oil.

Have a Vau xhall/Opel/Holden/Saturn/Chevrolet Astra.

Haha. Luckily for me, I live in PA do we don’t have to deal with front plates. It was a great looking car though.

One of my neighbors had a Saturn Astra when they were new here in the US. I thought it was sharp looking.

Yep, I had to be that guy.

No worries. I've gotten a few planets and a few rockets. I knew that was a possibility and I'm ok with it.

I don't love the black and tan interior, but I'd drive that car.

Congratulations on your birthday of the day, Chuckles! And here is your prize...
A SATURN SKY REDLINE IN THE BEST COLOR.
Afraid you’ll have to pick it up yourself. And pay for it yourself.

Wow, I feel so honored! That is a beautiful sky.
![]() 01/06/2019 at 10:42 |

The three door looks the best and I like the one with the panoramic windscreen the most.
The five door, not so much.
But was a good solid family car.
The estate, good for the growing family.
I think the new Astras would do well in the U.S. if Saturn was still around and GM still owned Vauxhall/Opel.
![]() 01/06/2019 at 10:45 |

No estate in the states, sadly. And I would need to sit in one with the panoramic glass before I could know how I really feel about it. I'd be worried that I'd bake in the summer sun.

Jeez, the development of the Saturn Sky took FOREVER.

Happy birthday! I remember seeing this pic of the first Saturn concept in car magazines. Looking at it now, it totally looks like an early ‘90s Mercury Tracer.

There is a blind that comes forward to the rear view mirror that blocks out the sun when you want it to .

I was just looking into their development time in general . I wasn’t reading car mags in ‘85 so I don’t remember. It looks like they used a 1st gen. Cavalier as a starting point and made adjustments.

But his weewee must be like 0.75" long judging by the size of the fig leaf.

Great cars, those Saturns. I still occasionally browse CL looking for a good one to have as a backup car.

You’re welcome. I thought you might. Here’s the link. Try not to throw up when you see how dirty the driver’s seat is.

Happy Birthday!
Loved that green color on Norm . GM has always done some great greens - light or dark, they’re all quite nice.
Back when I worked for Hughes Aircraft, which was a division of GM at the time, I nearly bought one of these. Mmm - beige on beige. I even had a silly ‘shopped picture of it on my cubicle wall, lowered with Porsche twists on it, complete with the red calipers. But after tossing a new motor in the E21 I decided to keep that car instead. A little later I considered an S-10, but you couldn’t get the sporty model with the extended cab, so once again I held on to the BMW...

If I could find one of those wagons now and it wasn’t beat to within an inch of it’s life, I'd be all over it.

HB, turned 41 recently myself. No pics I’m afraid but my sister had and loved a 96 purple manual Saturn Wagon until about 2008. Commonly known as the grapem obile.

Norm was a 96. Did the grapemobile have aftermarket paint? I don’t know if I ever saw a purple Saturn.
Happy belated birthday. 33 for me.

Mazda has made headlines with their HCCI engine recently , but did you know Saturn had the technology almost production ready a decade ago? https://oppositelock.kinja.com/well-isnt-this-intriguing-as-f-ck-1573026599

I don't need that spoiler, but otherwise I'd drive it.

Saturn has been making gas powered engines that operate like diesels for a long time, if you think about how much oil my old car burned.

They really are great. Easily the best cars GM was building at the time.
If I weren’t so concerned about a safety I would put some money into mine and keep driving it. But I got married about three years ago and since then I’ve become increasingly aware that it is far from the safest car on the road. It has been a really great car though . I’ve done the front wheel bearings twice each, most suspension components, and the radiator. I replaced the plug wires and original coil packs a few years ago just because I felt like it was a good idea. Nothing major has gone wrong with it and the car has never left me stranded. I don’t know for sure, but I’m pretty certain the clutch is still the original clutch. I love it and it’s really going to hurt when it goes away.

Not impossible I guess; it was bought used in 2000. But i f it got resprayed someone did a damn good job— I don’t remember ever spotting telltale signs (engine bay etc)

I got soo mixed up between Saturn and Subaru and SAAB (clearly I am a walking-and-train-city kind of girl for the time being ) that I almost put up the wrong picture, lol
Happy Birthday, Chuckles!

Thanks, Rooo!
Some people in real life actually call me Chuck. Not many these days, but it's a nickname that I acquired in my late teens because I wore Chuck Taylor's and there were too many people in my friend group named Dan. After a while, I'd get introduced to new people as Chuck and I didn't fight it. Some of those people went for years thinking that was my actual name.
